Foundation / Base

The base of your gravel driveway is arguably the most important component. It acts as a foundation and provides stability for the entire driveway structure. A properly prepared base will prevent sinking, shifting, and erosion. To create a solid base, you should remove any organic material, such as grass or topsoil, and then compact the soil. Your base should either be larger packed un stone or geo cell. Adding a layer of geotextile fabric can also help prevent the migration of soil particles and maintain the integrity of the base.

Drainage

Proper drainage is essential to ensure that water doesn’t accumulate on your driveway, leading to erosion and other issues. Incorporating a slope or crown or even an actual drain into the design allows water to flow away from the driveway and into designated drainage areas. Additionally, installing a geotextile fabric beneath the gravel can help prevent the base from becoming saturated and maintain its stability.

Gravel / Surface Stone

Choosing the right type and size of gravel is crucial for both aesthetics and functionality. Opt for angular gravel rather than rounded stones, as angular gravel interlocks better, creating a more stable surface. Consider using multiple layers of different-sized gravel to create a strong and even surface. The top layer should consist of smaller stones, while larger stones should be used for the lower layers to provide additional stability.
